Obituary for Alpha Retta Shore (Newman)


Mrs. Alpha Retta Newman Shore, age 93, a resident of the Barbour County Good Samaritan Society , departed this life March 16, 2017 in the Ruby Memorial Hospital at Morgantown following a period of declining health.

She was born on June 12, 1923 in Raystown, Pennsylvania, a daughter of the late George H. and Mary Jane Wolf Newman. On January 4, 1942 she was united in marriage to Sheldon LeRoy Shore who preceded her in death in 1985.

She is survived by six daughters; Alpha Jane Naylor and husband Sam of Moatsville, Shelly L. Shore of Shaw, South Carolina, Cindy M. Rasnake and husband James of Conway, South Carolina, Sarah M. Beavers and husband Michael also of Moatsville, Jan K. Huffman and husband Emmit of Philippi, and Shawn Shore of Grafton, one brother; Joe Newman of Mt. Union, Pennsylvania. Additional survivors include several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband and parents she was preceded in death by eight children; Ira Michael Shore, Sheldon Eugene Shore, Patricia Shore, Peggy Shore, Pat Shore, Nelda Shore and Jean Shore, one sister; Dorothy Newman.

Alpha attended the schools in Pennsylvania. She was a homemaker and also worked as a nurse’s aid in the Grafton City Hospital, from which she retired in 1989. After moving from Maryland with her husband, they settled down in Belington where they lived here for 41 years and she raised twelve children .She was a member of the New Testament Fellowship in Grafton, where she was a long standing member for over 30 years. She enjoyed to crochet and sew, and also loved to garden. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Alpha’s request for cremation will be honored. Her cremains will be interred on June 12, 2017; her birthday, at the Mt. Union Cemetery in Mt. Union, Pennsylvania. In Lieu of flowers the family asks memorial contributions can be made to the New Testament Fellowship 1100 W. Main Street Grafton, WV 26354.
